ACEC Georgia Geotechnical Forum

Tuesday, September 26, 2023 (11:00 AM - 12:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Join the ACEC Georgia Geotechnical Forum for a presentation on Mechanical Stabilization for Unpaved and Paved Roadways

Over the last 5 decades, various methodologies have been employed for the design of mechanically stabilized unpaved roads. The currently accepted design methodology for unpaved roads, the Giroud-Han methodology, was adopted by the FHWA in 2008.  As an improvement to the Giroud-Han method, the Lees Approach to Applied Mechanical Stabilization (aka: LAAMS method) has recently been introduced. The new design methodology addresses deficiencies in existing design methods and is based on more rigorous geotechnical information.

With the cost of roadway construction increasing at a rapid rate, resiliency of our nations infrastructure becomes increasingly important.  AASHTO realized the benefits of utilizing geosynthetics to stabilize aggregate base courses for flexible pavements and prompted them to publish the R 50-09 Standard of Practice.  This document provides guidance for using geosynthetics to increase pavement life, reduce section thicknesses and to be more economical.

Speaker: David Fuqua, PE, Area Engineer - South US, Tensar International Corporation.

ACEC Georgia members are invited to join the quarterly meeting for the Geotechnical Forum! The ACEC Georgia Geotechnical Forum was created in 2014 to bring together professionals within the Geotechnical practice area to discuss the business challenges and potential solutions that are unique to Geotechnical firms, as well as ideas about how ACEC Georgia might engage to address those concerns. The forum is co-chaired by Tom Tye with CERM and Riley O'Brien with Advanced Drainage Systems.
